Class of 1952

by Richard Kawakami

The Class of ’52 met at Marukai Food Court on June 15th with classmates Stanley Juan, Eddie and Mitsue Hokama, Jane Okimoto, David Funada, Edith/Frank Gikiu, Debi Araujo, and Richard Kawakami.   The class talk story ranged from who was absent today and feeling a bit under the weather (Marcellino Sugitan and Mildred Tanaka) to the shared goodies (i.e., arare, assorted cookies, chocolates, cakes).  Like many golden seniors, the class discussed medications and how to ensure the best way to dispose of them when it is no longer needed and more importantly whether one should be taking it and the interaction with other meds.

Richard Kawakami brought swiss chard and tomato plants to share.  An easy recipe for swiss chard is: harvest the outer leaves and the plant will continue to send out new leaves. The young leaves can be used in salads and the older one can be boiled and eaten with mayonnaise/soy sauce.

Eddie Hokama shared that his papaya tree is not thriving since he received it in the mail six months ago.  Any tips from the green thumbs out there?  Several classmates are heading out to Vegas this month — Eddie/Mitsue, Richard/Barbara and Stanley/Pearl!!!

Mitsue won on her last trip and is excited to repeat that experience!  Good luck to all!  Today’s gathering celebrated Mitsue’s birthday with a cake that Mildred baked for her despite Mildred’s absence.  Mahalo Mildred for your generosity!
Our next class meeting will be at Marukai Food Court on July 20th.  See you all there!
